Interested in evaluating arachnode.net without making changes to your machine?

Download a Virtual Hard Disk (.vhd) preconfigured with the following:

  • Windows Advanced Server 2003 R2*
  • Visual Studio 2005*
  • SQL Server 2005 Enterprise Edition
  • CommunityServer 2007.1 SDK*
  • TortoiseSVN

Installation Instructions:

  • Dowload Virtual PC 2007 here.
  • Download WinRAR here.
  • Download each part of the multi-part .rar file containing the Virtual Hard Disk (.vhd).
  • Assemble the Virtual Hard Disk (.vhd) with WinRAR.
  • Start Virtual PC 2007 and add a new Virtual Machine through 'New Virtual Machine Wizard'.
  • Select 'Add an existing virtual machine'.
  • Specify the name and location of the Virtual Machine File (.vmc).
  • Start the Virtual Machine, enter an address into Program.cs and begin crawling.

Logon Information:

  • Windows Advanced Server 2003 - Username: Administrator Password: (blank)
  • CommunityServer 2007.1 SDK - Username: admin Password: admin

Tips and Notes:

  • The Virtual Machine is configured to use 512MB of physical RAM.  The Virtual Environment will run with 512MB of physical RAM but will run slowly.  1GB physical RAM or more is recommended.  Virtual PC 2007 can utilize up to 2GB of physical RAM.
  • The Virtual Machine has 'undo disks' enabled which allow a user to accept or cancel changes made to the Virtual Machine during a session.  If errors occur during the evaluation, close the Virtual Machine and discard changes.  This will reset the Virtual Machine to the state at last boot.
  • Windows Advanced Server 2003 R2 contains only necessary services and files.
  • Visual Studio 2005 does not have MSDN installed.
  • SQL Server 2005 has only the necessary components enabled.  Replication and Notification Services are not installed.
  • CommunityServer 2007.1 SDK does not have a license for production, only for development.

- Please comment on the download speed.

* Operating system and software are trial/time-restricted versions.  This Virtual Hard Disk (.vhd) will expire June 15th, 2008.
† To reduce download size, operating system and software have not had service releases applied where possible.

download speed sucks! (you asked :) ) Seriously, I'm trying to download part 1, and i've been waiting for 10 minutes just for the page to finish loading before the download even starts

K scratch that - if you use wget (linux) you can download the parts really fast! My download speeds with wget are between 200 and 400 kpbs (about 1/2 hour per 700 meg part)

The download takes for ever, 300k ~ 400k. You should think of putting it on sourceforge, or some like that so we would have alternatives mirrors.

You need to keep these updated a bit better. I had already downloaded disk1 and disk2 before I read the fine print and realized I had just wasted several hours of download time for an outdated VHD.

Do you plan to provide an updated VHD (i.e. one that hasn't expired) any time soon?

Perhaps... It's an extremely time consuming process to create the VM's... perhaps more time consuming than we originally estimated...
